Crush has been my workout family for almost 3 years now. I have always been an athlete - multiple sports in both high school and college. In 2012 I ran 52 5ks; 2014 - 13 half marathons and a full marathon in early 2014; however, I was still a 'bigger' girl, even with all of that. After college sports ended, I ate and drank what I wanted, thinking it wouldn't catch up with me, but it did - all 50lbs. In the fall of 2014, when I was uninspired to do it on my own, I found Crush. At first, 3xs a week was more than enough and I cherry picked workouts, but I gradually grew to a regular 5amer (still am!), waking up 5xs a week to sweat and cuss and sometimes cry through WODs.
Working out has never been the issue, more so the eating. February 1, 2016, a group at Crush started Whole30. Apprehensive at first, I joined in on February 15 and completed my own 30 days. I realized that eating no processed foods, no sugar, no alcohol, no dairy (and boy do I love cheese AND ice cream!) was something that made me feel better, sleep better and be better. Still tipping the scale at 225 at the end of 2016, I vowed to do something different. With the love, care and encouragement of my Crush family, I took on a whole 60, which turned into a whole 90, and then whole 180 (which I will finish 7 days shy of do to a once in a lifetime trip to Ireland and Scotland). Point is, I know I could do the last 7 days, it's no longer about the number of days - 173 proved more than enough to me.
With my food choices in check and a supportive group of regular friends joining me daily and pushing me far past limits I ever thought possible (250# back squat anyone?), I have lost 45 lbs, run the fastest 10k pace per mile ever (without running training) and have learned/incorporated what truly fuels my body to accomplish what I want it to in a true mind, body, spirit overhaul. Thank you Crush, for investing time and energy into me, day in and day out! Bring on Half Ironman Boulder 2018!!!
I travel a lot for work and while traveling it is difficult to eat healthy. After a week-long work trip at the end of October 2016 I weighed more than I ever have in my life and decided it was time to make a change.
CrossFit has always been something I have wanted to get into. I don’t know why I waited so long. I half expected every CrossFit gym to be full of people just returning from the CrossFit games (big dudes and girls that could beat me up) and I would feel out of place. The first thing I noticed about CrossFit Crush was it was just a bunch of normal people wanting to be healthy and fit, that is what kept me coming back.
The first week was painful and I was disappointed I couldn’t do the Rx weight, but it felt good to be tired and sore. Feeling a sense of accomplishment after every workout was motivating and I started noticing results quickly. Without making major changes to my diet and making it to the gym 4-6 times a week I lost 30 lbs in 3 months. I mainly focused on eating healthier while traveling and keeping portions smaller at home. The other benefit of CrossFit was the increased flexibility. I have struggled with lower back and leg pain for some time now. It was difficult to sit on an airplane for longer than an hour without being extremely uncomfortable. At times my back pain was so bad I could not put on my socks. My back pain now seems to be a thing of the past. I am comfortable on airplanes again. I can sit on the floor and play with my kids for extended periods of time.
I still don’t Rx every workout but I feel stronger and healthier than ever. It is exciting to see times drop and weights increase. It seems I have come a long way in a short time but there is still so much progress to be made. I’m glad I found a supportive community like CrossFit Crush.

The truth is, I was clinically obese, I lived a sedentary lifestyle, and I didn't even have the energy to play with my kids. I was stressed out, somewhat depressed, and my relationships were suffering. I kept driving past CrossFit Crush to and from work and would tell myself that I should head in. Finally, I did.
I spent the first month coming to grips with who I really was and paying the price for it in aches and pains (I was too proud to scale the workouts). Eight months later, and 23 pounds lighter, I competed in my first one-day individual competition and was given a shirt that said 'Athlete' on the back. I wear it proudly because I know I have earned it.
I'm 37 now and I have big goals ahead. I'm still not as good as I once was, but CrossFit Crush and its supportive community is cheering me on to get there, and maybe, just once, I'll be as good as I ever was.
Crossfit has changed me in more ways the one. The obvious, and the reason most people probably start to begin with, is physically. When I started crossfit I couldn't begin to do a pull-up, I had to use the trainer bar with plywood weights for anything with strength, I couldn't do double unders, the list goes on. I remember going home and crying one of my first days because I had to use plywood weights AND was told to do pushups on my knees. (Thanks Travis) But I just kept going back, and kept working harder. How much you transform physically is up to you. You can cherry pick and not give 100%. Or you can come, even on the horrible days, and work extra on the things that are hard for you, and you'll see changes fast.
The biggest change for me though, was mentally. Before I started crossfit, I was scared of trying anything new. I was scared of trying and failing, or trying and embarrassing myself. But since I've started crossfit, I feel braver and stronger. I have a huge support system of people who encourage me to keep trying, and who still like me even if I fail the first time, or the first 100 times. They even still like me if I try and look like an idiot, which is pretty often. And it's nice to give the encouragement back to them. I love seeing people overcome something they were stuck on. This is the change that has followed me into all other aspects of my life and the most important change to me.

In my defense (in Cynthia's testimonial) I have a thing for poor form on push ups. And, as a trainer, if I don't make someone cry then I'm not doing my job!
In all seriousness, Cynthia is a shining example of someone who tries hard all the time, puts in just a little bit of extra work and is dedicated. The result is someone who can now do several STRICT pull ups in a row, string together lots of double unders and has seen AMAZING increases in her 'strength' numbers.
I don't want to leave Marc out. From putting in the 'work' in the gym to putting in the 'hard work' in the kitchen he has made tremendous strides as well. In his short (comparatively) time at Crush I expect to see a lot more big things from him.
